How to Use Kanzashi, a Quick and Easy Primer

Kanzashi can suit the style of any girl - and can be arranged just like flowers to best showcase the beauty of your doll. Here's how to use them!

The kanzashi are anchored with a very flexible eyepin for ease of arrangement. There are many ways to anchor an eyepin in a hairstyle.
1 - Tuck the pin under hair to hide it if a loose setting is ok
2 - Use the pin to pierce directly through woven wigs
3 - Place the pin through a hairstyle braid or loop like a hairpin
4 - Place the pin through a simple band or ribbon in the underlayer of hair. (match to your doll's hair color, or use a clear miniature rubber band as used for braces - usually easily available in drugstores)
5 - Or make a small braid in the underlayer of hair to anchor the pin.

When you have decided how you wish to fix a piece in the hairstyle, find your best angle for your favorite girl and the length of the pin you can hide in the hair, then trim any additional eyepin length easily with a set of shears, pliers or heavy scissors. If you wish to trim the eyepin very short, then one of the rubber band or braid anchor methods will work best. If the pin bends, it is easy to bend back into place - do not bend back and forth sharply at one spot or the wire may harden and break; instead, use your fingers to gently shape the angle you wish to have. If anything does happen to the pin they are easily replaced and we are happy to assist if needed.

Higher style tips:

Ready to try more? For a more elaborate and exotic look, you can build a full "flower arrangement" of kanzashi.

  • Kanzashi come in sets of two - you can arrange one at each side of the hairdo for a very cute hair accent, or you can place them both on one side for a more lush look.
  • Fan pieces can be arranged behind the kanzashi as a backdrop - these accent pieces have been modified to have a wire "comb" to let them be tucked into the side of the hair or into a hair bun. These fans and also the tassels noted below are used like baby's breath and leaf filler in a bouquet of flowers, giving dimension and contrast to the arrangement.
  • Chain tassels in gold or silver can be used as a brightly cascading backdrop to give a very full look. Fans and tassels are available here at very inexpensive rates if purchased with kanzashi. Some of these "filler" materials are listed below.
  • This images at the bottom of this set show a more elaborate arrangement being built, piece by piece:

Fans - available in silver and gold, these intricately detailed pieces are a little over 1/2 inch wide, and provide an ornate backdrop for an arrangement.

Chain tassels - A foot of chain compressed into one glorious waterfall of light and movement.

Traditional Dangles - I searched for over a year and experimented widely with cutting and drilling metal sheets before happily finding these pieces to use to make ornaments that look just like the swaying gold and silver hairpieces of real maiko. Arranged by hand for best effect.
$5 each if purchased with kanzashi, $9 for two.
